Dear Teachers and Advisors,

In today’s classrooms and school clubs, we are always looking for ways to make learning relevant and authentic for children. When students ask the pertinent question, “Why do we have to know this?” we should be prepared with an answer.

This is why we feel that our Shelter Box unit is a wonderful teaching tool. Here is your opportunity to use current global events to generate academic interest across the curriculum. You might also envision this as a way for students to view a disaster in a more up-close and personal way.

In a world of war and natural disasters, our young people must develop greater understanding and empathy for other cultures suffering the aftermath. Also, here is a chance to include literature, geography, social studies, science, and weather lessons as they relate to bringing aid to those in need. Club advisors may see this as the perfect way to kick off a fund-raising activity, or to promote volunteerism.

It is our hope that you will spend some time perusing these materials and that you will make a decision to use them to heighten your students’ awareness of the global plight of others less fortunate.
