July 7, 2008 - Aid for Myanmar Cyclone reaches Victims
Pictures showing ShelterBox’s continuing relief efforts in Myanmar have just been released. Thanks to great persistence ShelterBox successfully delivered nearly two thousand Boxes equipped with tents to the hardest hit areas of Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta. The May 2nd cyclone left over 130,000 people dead or missing.

ShelterBox was confirmed as the first UK-based Humanitarian Aid/Disaster Relief team to land in Yangon, Myanmar. The original team was later joined by American ShelterBox team members, Patrick Olson and David Eby, who accompanied an additional 1000 ShelterBoxes, totaling over 1800 Boxes that were flown into Yangon airport and disbursed throughout Myanmar.

Photographer and ShelterBox aid worker Mark Pearson has just released pictures of the team’s distribution of tents in Labutta in the Irrawaddy.

Pearson had this to say, “I have been in Labuttta Division in the Irrawaddy, I found ‘three mile camp’ which is home to 5250 survivors of the Cyclone. There are around 700 ShelterBox tents there all arranged perfectly. There is camp security, a hospital, clean water, food and schools all run by the government. The Survivors have set up shops in our tents and all sorts of little industries inside ‘three mile camp’.”

He said that Australian aid group, Medicins San Frontier, told him that there were also 300 ShelterBox Tents on the Myanmar island of Heignyi.

These newly released pictures reflect ShelterBox’s persistent humanitarian aid efforts in reaching the Burmese people, ShelterBox fund-raising manager, Sally Grint, said.

ShelterBox is sending an additional 200 tents, 2000 mosquito nets, 2000 tool kits, 600 wood burning stoves, 600 cooking pots, 400 ground sheets and educational equipment to Myanmar.

July 2, 2008 – China
ShelterBox continues to deliver aid in both China and Myanmar
A four-person ShelterBox Response Team is distributing an additional 730 ShelterBox tents to remote areas of China’s Gansu province (north of Sichuan). Even though the province has suffered significant damage from May’s major earthquake, Gansu has reportedly received little, if any, aid before ShelterBox’s arrival. Over 40,000 Chinese earthquake survivors have been aided by ShelterBox so far.

On another front, Box packing has resumed in our UK warehouse. The ShelterBox Response Team members on the ground in Myanmar have confirmed that the need for continued aid is still vital. The monsoon season now follows the devastating Cyclone Nargis, making the already desperate situation unbearable for the surviving victims. ShelterBox will respond again with wood burning stoves, school boxes (approximately 4,000 schools destroyed), tents and Boxes (currently used by the fishermen for storage of fish).

May 27th – China
The immediate response by ShelterBox of 800 boxes to China is finally reaching some of the Sichuan Provinces worst hit villages. The distribution of the first 200 boxes began today by the 4-man ShelterBox Response Team on the ground. The first consignment of boxes where split into two lots of 100. UK SRT leader Pat Prendergast reports from the villeages of Pengzhou & Bailurom that “tents are up and the locals are extremely happy, they are no doubt going to be under canvas for some time, ShelterBox tents are creating an excellent base.”

May 15 – MYANMAR (Burma)

CHARTER FLIGHT OF 1000 BOXES ARRIVES IN MYANMAR -
The on-site SRT team has trained many Myanmar disaster teams in Yangon on Shelterbox contents and setting up of tents. Planned distribution of the new shipment is various locations in the outlying Delta and islands. The boxes will be transported straight off the aircraft onto trucks and then into affected areas with the local staff in field.

May 16 – China

ShelterBox has made an initial commitment of 400 boxes to assist the earthquake victims in China. Boxes will be channeled in through Hong Kong and Beijing Rotary Clubs and the China Charity Federation. The boxes are destined for Changdu City in the Sichuan Province.

2006 in Review

In 2006 Shelterbox responded to disaster situations in 12 different countries, providing emergency accommodations for more than 82,000 disaster victims. The year began with aid still being delivered to earthquake victims in Kashmir, who also received further help in November. The year's biggest emergency was in Java, when the island was hit by an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, and a tsunami within just a few weeks. More Information
